Gravel Bikes

Gravel bikes are perfect for riders who crave adventure and want a bike that can handle a variety of terrains with ease and confidence. These versatile machines come with wider tyres and robust frames, giving you the stability and control needed to tackle everything from rugged backroads to forest trails and even smooth pavement. The balanced geometry of gravel bikes means they’re agile enough for twisty paths while still providing a comfortable ride for long distances. Plus, with plenty of mounting points for racks and gear, they're ideal for bikepacking trips and extended adventures.

Unlike hybrid bikes, which are designed primarily for urban commuting and light recreational use, gravel bikes are built to handle more challenging off-road conditions. They offer superior traction and durability, making them the better choice for rough and uneven terrains. To help you decide if a gravel bike or a hybrid bike is right for you, check out our comprehensive gravel vs. hybrid bike guide. Whether you're planning a multi-day journey or just exploring new trails, gravel bikes offer the performance and versatility you need to enjoy every ride to the fullest.

Gravel bike FAQs

What is a gravel bike?

A gravel bike is inbetween a mountain bike and road bike. They provide the sturdiness needed to be taken onto lighter mountain bike trails while still having good performance on roads thanks to features such as drop bars.

Is a gravel bike the same as a hybrid bike?

Although both hybrid and gravel bikes fill a similar 'niche' in being in between mountain and road bikes, gravel bikes tend to be a bit more suited towards people looking for outdoor adventures on aptly-named gravel trails, backpacking etc. The dropbars on a gravel bike can offer a range of sitting positions for tackling different road conditions, whereas the flatbars on a hybrid bike offer a somewhat more comfortable, upright sitting position which is ideal for navigating commutes. If you'd like more information, we have a full guide to the differences between hybrid and gravel bikes.

Are gravel bikes slower than road bikes?

Due to the fact that gravel bikes are so versatile, they may not always match a dedicated bike type in a specific scenario. Therefore, a comparable gravel bike may struggle to keep up with a specialised road bike. However, the gravel bike will excel in a wider range of situations, and so are particularly suited to riders who enjoy taking on a range of challenges while being confident that their bike will still perform.
